  A virus is a sort on computer vandalism. It is a program that hackers write to infiltrate your computer and cause harm to the files on your hard drive. They usually attack the Windows operating system files to cause your computer to stop functioning properly. Hackers write virus programs simply for the thrill of being able to do so. It is a constant battle between the hackers and countless anti virus software makers to protect against viruses. This is why Windows and anti virus software must continually be updated to counteract new viruses that appear on a daily basis.

Some things you can do to protect yourself. Don't open emails if you don't know who they are from. When you do open email, don't open any unknown attachments in the email. Even if an attachment is from a friend be very careful about opening them. They could be infected without the senders knowledge. Be very careful of popup ads. Some are designed to look like Windows error messages or even warnings about viruses. Clicking them could install a virus on your computer.
